FPU Tennis Blows Past Holy Names

OAKLAND, Calif. – The FPU men's and women's teams travelled to Holy Names on Wednesday, and both knocked off the Hawks. The women won the first matchup of the day 7-0, with the men taking the afternoon match 5-2.
 
MATCH ONE
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • With the Hawks shorthanded, the Sunbirds were able to take the doubles point by default, giving them an early 1-0 lead.
  • In the No. 4 match, Sanne Brull blew past her opponent, winning 6-0, 6-0 without dropping a set.
  • Alice Di Matteo won the No. 3 match comfortably, taking it 6-1, 6-1, and Lea Falentin was able to win the No. 2 match 6-4, 6-1 to seal the team win.
  • Maria Borodii pulled off an exciting win in the No. 1 match. After falling 6-4 in the first set, she was able to battle back and win the next two 6-1, 6-0.
  • With the Hawks being shorthanded, the Sunbirds won the Nos. 5 and 6 matches by default, giving them the clean sweep.
 
MEN'S MATCH
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Sunbirds were able to take the doubles point when Ben Cronau and Joshua Wong won the No. 1 match 7-5, followed by a dramatic 7-6 win by Sven Bangert and Pablo Zubieta in the No. 3 match.
  • Bangert was able to add a singles point for FPU with a 6-2, 6-4 win in the No. 5 match.
  • After falling 7-6 in the first set, Gregor Kliimask was able to rally, winning sets two and three 6-2, 6-0 to claim another point for the Sunbirds.
  • Zubieta also fell in the first set, going down 6-3, but he was able to cap off the No. 6 match with a 6-1 win in set two, followed by a 10-4 tiebreak win in set three.
  • Wong was able to split the first two sets 4-6, 6-4 before taking the third set by default and securing the fifth point for FPU.
 
UP NEXT
 
The Blue and Orange return to Fresno for their final home match of the season against Biola. The men are scheduled for an 11 a.m. start time, followed by the women at 2 p.m.
