Sunbirds Split Day One At Holy Names

ALAMEDA, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific baseball team kicked off a four-game set at Holy Names on Friday, winning game one 4-2 thanks to a two-run double from Tommy Rover in the ninth inning but fell short 7-6 in game two.
 
GAME ONE
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After back-to-back one-two-three innings in the first, the Sunbirds jumped out to an early one-run lead in the top of the second thanks to an RBI from Matt McGrady.
  • Donte Valdez led the inning off with a leadoff double. He was able to advance to third on a fly ball from Andrew Valdez, and with one out, a ground ball by McGrady allowed him to score.
  • Holy Names was able to tie the game in the bottom half of the inning, but FPU was able to retake the lead in the top of the fourth inning.
  • The Sunbirds led the inning off with a single fron D. Valdez to the shortstop, followed by a single to right field from A. Valdez.
  • With one out, D. Valdez was able to cross the plate after a Holy Names error to the third baseman giving the Sunbirds a 2-1 lead.
  • After a stalemate through three and a half more innings, the Hawks were able to tie it up in the bottom of the eighth inning at 2-2.
  • FPU came back strong in the top of the ninth after A. Valdez led the inning off with an infield single to the shortstop.
  • With one out, A. Valdez advanced to second on a wild pitch, and was able to take third on a groundout to the third baseman.
  • Kyle Willman was able to draw a two-out walk, putting runners on the corners for Rover, who doubled down the left-field line, which gave the Sunbirds a 4-2 lead.
  • Matt Stearns entered on the mound for FPU in the bottom of the ninth and was able to shut the Hawks down to get the save and the win for FPU.
STATS FROM THE GAME
  • D. Valdez went 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored.
  • A. Valdez scored one run on a 2-for-4 day at the plate.
  • Rover brought in two key runs on a 1-for-4 day with a double.
  • Garrett Cooper struck out five batters with no walks in seven and two-thirds innings pitched.
GAME TWO
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The game started with two scoreless innings from both teams, but the Sunbirds were able to break the stalemate in the top of the third.
  • With one out inning the inning, Khalid Johnson was able to reach base on a throwing error form the Holy Names third baseman.
  • A single from Jared Aguilar moved Johnson to third base with one out, and a groundout from Andrue Lackey allowed him to cross home.
  • The Hawks popped off for a seven-run third inning to take a 7-1 lead.
  • After a scoreless third and fourth innings, the Sunbirds were able to score two to make it a 7-3 contest.
  • Ben Junbluth led the inning off by being hit by a pitch, and that was followed by a walk from Rover,
  • Johnson singled to right field on the next at bat to load the bases for FPU with no outs.
  • A single from Aguilar on the ensuing at bat scored Rover and Junbluth while advancing Johnson to second base.
  • Aguilar and Johnson each stole a base, but the Sunbirds were unable to bring either baserunner in, keeping it at a four-run game.
  • Neither team was able to score in the sixth inning, but the Sunbirds were able to extend their rally with two runs in the seventh.
  • After a leadoff error that allowed Johnson to reach first, followed by a stolen base, Aguilar doubled down the left-field line to make it 7-4 with no outs.
  • Shane Pursell was then hit by a pitch, and he advanced to second, along with Aguilar to third, on a wild pitch with no outs in the inning.
  • With one out, McGrady hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield, plating Aguilar, but that was all the Sunbirds could muster with two innings remaining.
  • Jaylin Rodriguez, who entered the game in the third inning for FPU, was able to sit the Hawks down in order in the bottom of the seventh to send the game into the eighth only trailing by two runs.
  • In the top of the eighth, Rover was able to hit a one-out double down the right-field line to give the Sunbirds a runner in scoring position.
  • With two outs, Aguilar was able to bring Rover in with a single to centerfield, making it a one-run game.
  • Rodriguez shut the Hawks down in order in the bottom of the eighth, but the Sunbirds were unable to continue the rally in the ninth, forcing the split in the doubleheader. 
STATS FROM THE GAME
  • Aguilar had a strong day at the plate, driving in four runs on a 4-for-5 day with a double and a run scored.
UP NEXT
 
The Blue and Orange will conclude the series against Holy Names with a doubleheader on Saturday scheduled for 12 p.m.
