Women's Tennis Knocks Off Nationally-Ranked Sea Lions

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The FPU tennis teams took on Point Loma on Tuesday, with the women knocking off the No. 23 Sea Lions 4-3, followed by a men's 7-0 loss.

QUOTABLE

"I'm just beyond words on how the women started the day with a huge win that we were looking to accomplish. The men followed and played strong, but we still need to work on minimizing unforced errors. One step at a time." – head coach George Rodriguez

WOMEN'S MATCH
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Sunbirds got off to a slow start in doubles, losing 6-0 in both the No. 1 and No. 2 matches, which gave Point Loma the point.
  • FPU was able to get on the board in singles thanks to Lea Falentin, who took the first match with a 6-1, 6-4 win in the No. 2 match.
  • Sanne Brull gave the Sunbirds a 2-1 lead after winning her No. 4 match 6-3, 6-0.
  • The Sea Lions were able to get two singles points in the No. 6 and No. 5 matchups, but huge wins from Maria Borodii and Alice Di Matteo gave the Sunbirds the 4-3 win, avenging the 4-3 loss at home back in Feburary.

MEN'S MATCH
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Point Loma took the doubles point with a pair of 6-1 wins in the No. 1 and No. 2 matches.
  • Tough finishes in the Nos. 5, 3 and 1 matches gave the Sea Lions a 4-0 lead, and they stretched it to 5-0 after a loss in the No. 4 match.
  • After tough first sets for both Martin Ramirez and Pablo Zubieta, the two both put together strong second sets, winning four games each. But Point Loma finished strong in both and took the 7-0 win.
