Sunbirds Offense Rolls to Close Out Convergence Tournament

LA VERNE, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific women's water polo team closed out the Convergence Tournament on Saturday, falling 15-10 to La Salle, but ended with a 22-4 rout over Penn State Behren.
 
GAME ONE
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Explorers jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first period, but Hannah Walker was able to get one back with 4:25 left in the quarter.
  • The two teams went back and forth the rest of the period, including a goal from Amy Zaninovich, but the Explorers were able to take a 5-2 lead into the second quarter.
  • La Salle added one more to open the second quarter, but two goals from Zaninovich and Tatum Benson cut into the Explorer lead.
  • La Salle ended the first half on a 3-0 run and took a 9-4 lead into the break.
  • The Explorers continued their run to open the second half, scoring four more goals, but the Sunbirds went on a 5-0 run that went into the fourth quarter to cut the deficit to four.
  • It started with Bella Alcazar, who scored with 1:29 left in the third quarter. Zaninovich was able to score two goals to open the fourth quarter, and Benson and Natalie Kisling both scored one during the run.
  • La Salle was able to pull away with two more goals, but Sam Dieterle was able to net one more for the Sunbirds with 1:05 left in the contest.
 
STATS FROM THE GAME
  • Zaninovich led the team in goals and points with four of each.
  • Benson scored two goals and finished with two points.
  • Camryn Berra had nine saves in the contest.
 
GAME TWO
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • It was all FPU from the start, scoring 12 unanswered goals between the first and second periods.
  • Emily Lopez-Ibarra opened the game with a goal, and Zaninovich scored one right after.
  • Rosemary Chapman scored her first of three goals in the long run with 6:01 left in the first quarter, followed by back-to-back goals from Benson.
  • Madison Jacques added her named to the box score with back-to-back goals, followed by a third from Benson to open the second quarter.
  • After two more from Chapman, Alcazar and Dieterle were able to close out the run with a goal each.
  • Penn State Behrend got on the board to start the second half, but the Sunbirds responded with five more goals, one from Zaninovich, Dieterle and Walker, followed by two more from Jacques.
  • After Penn State Behrend scored its second goal of the game, Lopez-Ibarra and Katie Bloom each added to the Sunbird scoreline.
  • Penn State Behrend scored their third goal of the game, and then Dani Chastain answered with back-to-back goals.
  • Penn State Behrend was able to add its last goal of the contest with 2:11 left in the game, but it closed with yet another FPU goal, scored by Bloom with under a minute to go.
 
STATS FROM THE GAME
  • Bloom finished with six points on two goals and four assists.
  • Jacques was strong offensively with a game-high four goals in the win.
  • Benson scored three goals on three shots in the win.
  • Chapman matched Bloom with six points on three goals and three assists.
  • Berra came away with 16 saves.
