Sunbirds Open WWPA Play With Win Over Monterey Bay

MONTEREY, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific women's water polo team kicked off Western Water Polo Association play on Saturday, knocking off Cal State Monterey Bay 11-10 thanks to a late goal from Rosemary Chapman.

QUOTABLE

"I couldn't be more proud of the girls. Today was a true team win, everyone contributed. They showed a lot of confidence and grit today. We started off a little rough but once we settled in we played consistent. I never doubted their ability to win today. Even when going done by three goals they were persistent in their attack. It was nice to begin conference play with a win." – head coach Bryan Suhovy

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Otters got on the board first with two goals and took a 2-0 lead into the second quarter, but a goal from Tatum Benson cut that to a one-goal deficit.
  • Monterey Bay was able to add one more before the end of the first quarter, but Hannah Walker was able to answer with 1:49 left in the period.
  • The two teams traded goals to close out the period, with Amy Zaninovich making it a 4-3 game with 17 seconds to go in the first quarter.
  • After the Otter stretched their lead to two to open the second quarter, Zaninovich and Benson each scored to tie the game 5-5 with 4:59 left in the half.
  • Two more goals from Monterey Bay gave the Otters a two-goal lead heading into the break, but Walker was able to open the second half with a goal to make it 7-6.
  • Less than a minute later, Monterey Bay scored to get their lead back to two, but a Sam Dieterle goal with 2:22 left in the third and an Emily Lopez-Ibarra goal to open the fourth tied the game back up.
  • The Otters took the lead right back with 5:44 left in the game, but Chapman tied it with her first goal of the game, followed by Zaninovich's third goal to give the Sunbirds their first lead of the contest.
  • Monterey Bay was able to tie it with 2:52 left, but less than a minute later, a goal from Chapman gave the lead right back to FPU, and it was ultimately enough for the win.

STATS FROM THE GAME
  • Zaninovich scored a team-high three goals in the win.
  • Chapman had two goals, including the game winner, in the win to go along with two steals.
  • Benson and Walker matched with two goals of their own, and Dieterle and Lopez-Ibarra each had one goal
