LAVERNE, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific women's water polo team played Concordia and Ottawa on the first day of the Convergence Tournament on Friday as the Sunbirds fought hard in both games but fell short 13-6 to the Eagles and 14-13 to the Spirit.

GAME ONE
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Rosemary Chapman netted two goals in the first quarter, as the Sunbirds trailed the Eagles 3-2 early.
- Tatum Benson and Hannah Walker scored back-to-back goals to open the second quarter, giving the Birds a 4-3 lead.
- CUI went on a 4-0 run to end the quarter and carried a 7-4 lead into halftime.
- Benson scored another goal in the third quarter, but the Eagles had found their rhythm and began to pull away.
- Madison Jacques scored the final goal of the game, but it wasn't enough as the Eagles took it 13-6.
STATS FROM THE GAME
- Chapman and Benson tied for a team-high two goals each.
- Cameryn Berra made nine saves for the Birds.
GAME TWO
HOW IT HAPPENED
- FPU was excellent in the first quart against Ottawa, using a 5-3 run that featured two goals from Amy Zaninovich to take an early lead.
- Bella Alcazar and Chapman scored two first-half goals each, aiding the Sunbirds to an 8-7 halftime lead.
- The third quarter proved to be the difference, as Ottawa went on a 4-2 run during that span to take a one-point lead.
- Zaninovich, Alcazar, and Benson all scored goals in the final frame, but it wasn't enough as the Spirit held on for a 14-13 win.
STATS FROM THE GAME
- Zaninovich tied for a game-high four goals while dishing out three assists to finish worth seven points for the Sunbirds.
- Alcazar was also brilliant, scoring three goals as Chapman added two more of her own.
- Berra made six saves in the second game of the day.
UP NEXT
The Blue and Orange continue in the Convergence Tournament tomorrow, playing La Salle and Pen State Behrend. The first game starts at 9 a.m. while the second happens at 12:45 p.m.
