FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific baseball team closed out the series against Concordia on Saturday, falling 6-2 in game one, but taking the second game 5-2 to get the series split.
GAME ONE
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Sunbirds were able to hold the Eagles scoreless to start the game. In the bottom half, Khalid Johnson singled up the middle but was picked off.
- That was followed by a walk from Garrett Cooper, and a single from Jared Aguilar put runners on first and second with one out.
- With two outs, Cooper and Aguilar advanced a base after a throwing error, and a walk from Donte Valdez loaded the bases. But the Eagles were able to get the final out and keep FPU off the board.
- After scoreless frames in the second and third innings, CUI was able to plate three runs to take a 3-0 lead in the top of the fourth.
- The Eagles scored two more in the fifth and another in the sixth to make it 6-0.
- FPU started the eighth inning off with a leadoff double from Aguilar.
- With one out, D. Valdez hammered one down the left-field line that one bounced into the fence. The Eagles had trouble getting it in, and he was able to round the bases for a two-run inside-the-park home run to make it 6-2.
- Andrew Valdez was able to follow that with a double, but the Eagles were able to hold the Sunbirds to just the two runs and get the win after shutting FPU down in the ninth.
STATS FROM THE GAME
- Aguilar went 3-for-5 at the plate with a double.
- D. Valdez drove in both FPU runs in a 1-for-2 day at the plate with his inside-the-park home run and two walks.
- Justin Fuson struck out five batters in five innings of work on the mound.
- Jaylin Rodriguez struck out three in three innings of relief.
GAME TWO
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Aguilar picked up right where he left off, hitting second in the lineup, and following a Johnson leadoff walk with a two-run home run to put the Sunbirds up 2-0 after one inning.
- Aguilar also started the game on the mound, striking out two batters in two scoreless innings for the Eagles to start the game.
- Aguilar sat down seven Eagles in a row heading into the bottom of the fifth inning, where the Sunbirds added three more runs to make it 5-0.
- It started with Ben Jungbluth was hit by a pitch to start the inning.
- After a couple of groundouts, Johnson walked for the second time of the game, and Aguilar drove in two more runs with a double that hit the left-field fence in the air.
- He was later brought in on a single from Andrue Lackey.
- In the top of the sixth, Aguilar struck out two of the four batters he saw to keep it at a 5-0 game.
- The Sunbirds had runners on first and second with one out in the bottom of the sixth, but they were unable to score a run.
- There was some stress for FPU in the top of the seventh when they scored two runs, but Aguilar was able to shut it down when it mattered most and get the complete-game win.
STATS FROM THE GAME
- Aguilar went 2-for-3 at the plate with four RBI's, two runs and a home run. On the mound, he pitched a complete seven innings, striking out eight with no walks.
- Lackey went 1-for-3 with one RBI.
- Johnson scored two runs with two walks out of the leadoff spot.
UP NEXT
The Blue and Orange will go back on the road for a four-game series against Holy Names on April 1-2. The doubleheader on Friday is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start, with the doubleheader on Saturday set for 12 p.m.
