Sunbirds Battle Broncos in First Home Match of the Season

FRESNO, Calif. ­– The Fresno Pacific women's water polo team played their first home game this season on Saturday, as they hosted Santa Clara at Sunnyside High School. Despite getting more shots up than the Broncos, the Sunbirds couldn't find the back of the net enough, falling 6-3. 

 HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Hannah Walker got the Sunbirds on the board, firing a shot past the keeper to put the Sunbirds up 1-0. 
  • After the Broncos tied it, Amy Zaninovich put one in the back of the net to give the Birds a 2-1 lead at the end of the first quarter. 
  • The second quarter featured tough defense from both teams, as Santa Clara scored the only goal of the period. 
  • The Sunbirds and Broncos were tied at two entering the break. 
  • The Broncos made moves in the third quarter and went on a 2-0 run, taking a 4-2 lead into the final period. 
  • Walker opened the fourth quarter with a goal that brought the Sunbirds to within a point of tying. 
  • The Broncos found two goals late and went on to take the match 6-3. 
STATS FROM THE GAME
  • FPU outshot SCU 28-26 for the game. 
  • Defensively, the Birds nabbed seven steals. 
  • Walker led the Sunbirds with two goals. 
  • Rosemary Chapman led the defensive efforts, leading the team with two steals. 
  • Camryn Berra was excellent in net for the Sunbirds, saving 13 shots throughout the game.
