Sunbirds Drop First Two Against Sharks

WAIPAHU, Hawaii – The Fresno Pacific baseball team opened up a four-game set against Hawaii Pacific on Wednesday, falling in both games to open the series. The Sunbirds scored two runs in the top of the ninth in game one, but the comeback fell just short, and they lost 6-5. In game two, the Sharks scored seven runs in the last five innings to win 9-4.

GAME ONE
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Sunbirds struck first in the top of the second after Matt McGrady led the inning off by being hit by a pitch, followed by a double from Andrue Lackey that advanced him to third.
  • A fielder's choice got McGrady out at home, and then with two outs, Kyle Willman was hit by a pitch to load the bases. That brought up Cole Yoshida, who drew a walk to bring in Lackey for the first run of the game.
  • Garrett Cooper was able to sit the Sharks down in order in the bottom of the second inning with two strikeouts, but in the third, HPU found a spark and scored four runs to make it 4-1.
  • After scoreless frames in the fourth and fifth innings, the Sunbirds were able to cut the deficit to one run after scoring two in the sixth.
  • A leadoff walk from Tommy Rover, a single from Andrew Valdez and a bunt single from McGrady loaded the bases for FPU to start the sixth inning with no outs.
  • Lackey was able to hit a sacrifice fly to left field, which scored Rover, and then a single by Jared Aguilar on the next at bat brought in Valdez.
  • Matt Stearns entered the game for the Sunbirds in the seventh inning and gave up one run in the frame, making it 5-3. The Sharks were able to add one more in the bottom of the eighth to extend their lead to three.
  • In the top of the ninth, Willman led things off with a single to left field, followed by a single from Yoshida to put runners at the corners with no outs.
  • A sacrifice fly from Khalid Johnson plated the pinch runner Damien Holmes to make it a two-run game with one out.
  • A sacrifice bunt from Rover allowed Yoshida to take second base with two outs, and he was brought in to score by Valdez, who singled up the middle to make it 6-5. But HPU was able to get the final out and put a halt to the rally.

STATS FROM THE GAME
  • Aguilar went 2-for-4 in the game with one RBI.
  • Valdez finished with two hits on the afternoon while scoring a run and bringing one in.
  • Lackey roped off a double in a 1-for-3 day with a run and a RBI.
  • Cooper struck out six batters in six innings of work on the mound.
  • Stearns struck out three batters in his two innings of relief.

GAME TWO
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Just like in game one, the Sunbirds struck first, this time putting up three runs in the first inning.
  • It started with Johnson singling through the left side and then stealing second base before Rover drew a walk to put runners on first and second with no outs.
  • A wild pitch gave a base to both Johnson and Rover, and Valdez was able to reach first on a fielding error that loaded the bases with no outs.
  • Lackey brought Johnson in, advanced Rover to third, and advanced Valdez to second with a sacrifice fly to left field, and Aguilar brought in Rover and Valdez on a single up the middle to make it 3-0.
  • The Sharks were able to get one back in the first inning, and after a scoreless second, they were able to score one more in the third and two in the fourth to take a 4-3 lead.
  • In the top of the fifth inning, Mitchell Silvas led things off with a triple to right-center field, and he was brought in on a sacrifice fly by Shane Pursell to tie the game up at 4-4.
  • Three runs in the bottom of the fifth gave HPU a 7-4 lead, and they were able to score one run in the seventh and eighth innings each to put the game out of reach and take the first two of the series.

STATS FROM THE GAME
  • Lackey went 1-for-3 with his second double of the day and a run batted in.
  • Aguilar brought in two runs on a 1-for-4 day at the plate, and also struck out four batters on the mound.
