Sunbirds Offense Leads to Series Split

WAIPAHU, Hawaii – The Fresno Pacific baseball team took games two and three on Thursday against Hawaii Pacific 6-5 and 12-2 to split the four-game series and close out the Hawaii road trip.
 
GAME ONE
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Khalid Johnson led the game off with an infield single, and he advanced into scoring position by stealing second base.
  • A groundout allowed Johnson to advance to third, which was followed by Andrew Valdez hitting a groundball to the short stop, who committed a throwing error, bring Johnson home to take a 1-0 lead.
  • A single up the middle by Andrue Lackey moved Valdez to second, who then stole third base to put runners at the corners. Jared Aguilar then doubled down the third-base line, bringing in Valdez and Lackey to take a 3-0 lead.
  • After Justin Fuson sat down the top of the HPU lineup in order, the Sunbirds were able to add to their tally in the top of the second inning after a Johnson sacrifice fly plated Nolan Brown.
  • Fuson was able to sit down the Sharks in order again in the bottom of the second, but after a scoreless top of the third, HPU was able to score a run in the bottom half to make it 4-1 after three innings.
  • After a scoreless fourth inning, the Sunbirds were held at bay in the top of the fifth. HPU was able to take advantage, scoring three runs in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game.
  • The Sharks were able to take a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning, but the Sunbirds put together a big seventh inning and took the lead right back.
  • It started when Cole Yoshida drew a one-out walk and then stole second base, followed by a single to right field from Johnson that sent Yoshida to third.
  • Johnson took second base to put runners on second and third, and then Valdez stepped up with two outs to single up the middle and give his team the lead.
  • Gino Helmuth entered the game in relief of Fuson in the seventh and went on to earn the three-inning save.
 
STATS FROM THE GAME
  • Johnson went 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI, two runs and two stolen bases.
  • Aguilar also went 2-for-4 with two RBI's and a double.
  • Valdez had three RBI's in the win and also scored a run.
  • Fuson earned the win on the mound in six innings pitched.
  • Helmuth secured his second save of the season after tossing three shutout innings of relief.
 
GAME TWO
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Game two of the day and four of the series was all FPU from the start, and it started in the first inning when Johnson reached on a throwing error to lead off the game. A single by Garrett Cooper put runners on first and second with no outs, and Johnson stole third.
  • With one out, Lackey reached on a fielder's choice that scored Johnson to give the Sunbirds an early 1-0 lead.
  • FPU piled it on in the second inning with two more runs when Ben Jungbluth scored from third on a passed ball and a single from Yoshida brought in Jack Foote.
  • Things opened up for the Sunbirds in the third inning when they scored five runs to take an 8-0 lead.
  • A double from Gavin VanGronigen brought in Lackey for the first run of the inning, and Foote brought in Aguilar to make it 5-0.
  • An infield single from Johnson made it 6-0 when VanGronigen crossed the plate, and that was followed by a single from Cooper the plated Johnson and Foote.
  • Three more runs were scored in the fourth inning to make it 11-0. It started after the Sunbirds loaded the bases and Foote got hit by a pitch to bring in Lackey.
  • A bases-loaded walk by Yoshida scored Aguilar to make it 10-0, and then Cooper was also hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring in VanGronigen.
  • The Sharks were able to get on the board in the fourth with two runs, but the Sunbirds closed things out with a run in the seventh to make it 12-2 when Jared Remspecher hit a single to bring in Isaiah Clark.
 
STATS FROM THE GAME
  • Michael Barker got the win on the mound after striking out seven batters in six innings of work.
  • Cooper went 2-for-3 with three RBI's.
  • Aguilar also went 2-for-3 with two RBI's.
  • Johnson stole two bases for the second time of the day and also scored two runs.
  • VanGronigen scored two runs and had the only extra-base hit of the day with a double.
 
UP NEXT
 
The Blue and Orange return home on March 17-19 for a four-game set against Academy of Art. Games one is scheduled to start at 5 p.m. on Thursday, with games two and three being a doubleheader on Friday starting at 2 p.m. The series finale will take place on Saturday at 12 p.m.
