Sunbirds Walk Off No. 25 Chico State to Open Series

FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific baseball team won in dramatic fashion on Friday night, walking off No. 25 Chico State 8-7 in the opening game of the three-game series.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Wildcats got things started in the top of the first, scoring with two outs to make it 1-0.
  • After a scoreless first for the Sunbirds, they were able to tie the game on a Jared Aguilar double that plated Donte Valdez, followed by a sacrifice fly by Kyle Willman that scored Andrue Lackey.
  • Neither team was able to plate a run in the third inning, but Chico State tied it up in the fourth, and then score two more in the inning to make it 4-2.
  • The Sunbirds got one back in the bottom half of the fourth when a balk allowed Lackey to score his second run of the game.
  • The Wildcats extended their lead to two in the top of the fifth, but a walk from Aguilar brought in Tommy Rover to make it 5-4.
  • Chico State scored two more runs in the sixth inning to make it 7-4, but the Sunbirds responded in the seventh when Aguilar drove in his third and fourth runs of the game with a single, scoring Rover and Andrew Valdez.
  • A double from A. Valdez in the eighth tied things up 7-7 when Cole Yoshida crossed the plate.
  • After Gino Helmuth held the Wildcats scoreless in the ninth, Matt McGrady was able to hit a one-out, pinch-hit triple to right-centerfield. Nolan Brown came in to pinch run, and then Khalid Johnson hit a ground ball to the shortstop, whose throw brought the Chico State first baseman off the bag, scoring Brown and giving the Sunbirds the dramatic win.
