Melis, 'Birds Blot Out Vulcans

FRESNO, Calif.-Behind their third consecutive home sweep, the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds (16-7 overall, 15-4 PacWest) took care of the Hawai'i Hilo Vulcans (4-22 overall, 4-16 PacWest) in straight sets Wednesday night at the Special Events Center.

Chloe Melis delivered 7 kills and was at least a part of 5 blocks as the Sunbirds typical balanced attack was in full force against the Sharks.

FPU scored five straight points behind Katelyn Kirkman's serve, staking an early 6-2 lead in the opening set.

The duo of Cambria Waites and Corinne Acosta started hot as well, delivering three kills a piece in the set.

Catie Speas and Makena Ogas each had massive service runs to sandwich the lone point from Hilo, turning a 12-7 lead into an 18-8 advantage.

From there, Melis helped close out the frame with a kill, solo block and a block assist with Kaiessa Sounart that punctuated a 25-11 victory in set one.

The Sunbirds held the Vulcans in the negative through the first set, forcing 8 errors while holding Hilo to just 7 kills.

FPU dropped the first two points of the second set before Kirkman's service run turned the tide into a 7-3 advantage.

Hilo hung within three at 13-0 before Anastassiya Barakhoyeva's service run was filled with two more Melis kills and another combo block with Sounart.

Barakhoyeva started the run with an ace, which also became a big part of the Sunbirds 2nd set lead.

Up 22-12, Hilo got a little closer late before Acosta and Waites finished off the set. Acosta tallied four kills while Waites added three more kills in the set, with the freshman's kill finishing off the set 25-17.

Makena Ogas set FPU off to a 4-0 lead from the service line while picking up her first ace of the night. Acosta and Waites also continued their dominance in the run.

Melis joined the party with three more kills while fellow middle Madison Girnius was a part of two blocks.

The Sunbirds opened up a 19-10 lead before Melis and Sounart chipped in a pair of kills.

However, it was Barakhoyeva who completed the match, dropping in her only kill of the night on the final attempt.

The Sunbirds were paced by Acosta and Waites splitting 20 kills, while Melis was next with 7. Ogas and Girnius each added four kills while Sounart tallied three.

Speas led FPU with 19 assists while Acosta had a team high 13 digs.

Its the third straight home sweep for the Sunbirds, who have delivered some of their best matches in front of the home crowd all season.

The Sunbirds move into sole possession of 2nd place before Point Loma plays Biola on Thursday.

Fresno Pacific will close out the regular season with Senior Day against the PacWest leading Chaminade Silverswords, Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Special Events Center. The seniors will be honored after the match on Saturday.
