FRESNO, Calif.-The stellar ride came to an end on Senior Day as the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds (16-9 overall, 15-5 PacWest) fell in straight sets to the Chaminade Silverswords (24-7 overall, 19-1 PacWest) Saturday afternoon inside the Special Events Center.
For a team picked to finish 10
th at the beginning of the year, the Sunbirds flashed the brilliance that helped them demolish those predictions, but couldn't upend the conference champions.
Chaminade raced out in the first set behind Alexia Byrnes and a trio of service aces. The Sunbirds could never pull even.
Seniors
Kaiessa Sounart and
Corinne Acosta each delivered four kills in the set, but FPU dropped the opening game 25-20.
The Sunbirds got out to a much better start in the second set, leading for much of the opening twenty points. While Chaminade kept things close, the Sunbirds eventually opened an 11-8 lead.
However, Chaminade's 6-0 run flipped the pressure onto FPU. The Sunbirds responded behind freshman
Cambria Waites, who tallied four kills in the set, ultimately forcing the Silverswords into a timeout once the set was tied at 18.
Three service errors by Chaminade also kept FPU in the set, but the Silverswords closed the set on a 7-2 run to win 25-20 again.
Chaminade opened up a big lead in set 3, ultimately building a 20-10 advantage. Chaminade forced match point at 24-16, but FPU stayed alive behind senior
Anastassiya Barakhoyeva's service run that included a pair of kills by Sounart.
Ultimately, the Sunbirds missed just wide for the final point to close out another 25-20 set.
FPU celebrated 7 seniors after the match, with each leaving their imprint on the Sunbird's successful season.
Fresno Pacific's 15 conference wins equal the most in the NCAA Era, a mark set in the first season in which they played a PacWest schedule. It also equals the last three seasons of conference victories combined.
