SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The FPU men's water polo team (2-20, 0-7 WWPA) played its final regular-season road match on Saturday, falling 16-6 to Santa Clara (11-12, 4-4 WWPA).
 
The Broncos came out firing, jumping out to a 6-0 lead in the first period, and they added one more to open the second period to go up 7-0.
 
The Sunbirds were able to get on the board thanks to a pair of goals from Blake Johnson and Thilo Popp in the second period, but Santa Clara got one back with 2:02 left in the half to take an 8-2 lead into the break.
 
They were able to add one more just over a minute into the second half, but it was followed by two straight goals from the Sunbirds when Forrest Gray dented the net, followed by Eugenio Maldonado's first goal of the contest to make it 9-4.
 
After four straight from the Broncos in the third and fourth quarters to make it 13-4, Maldonado was able to add his second goal of the contest. That was followed by three more from Santa Clara to extend the lead to 16-5 before Sabelo Mlaba added one more for the Sunbirds with just over a minute to go in the game.
 
FPU will close out its regular season on Sunday when they return home for a matchup with Air Force. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
