FRESNO, Calif.-Missed chances and a pair of second half goals just three minutes apart cost the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds (8-6-2 overall, 5-4 PacWest) in a 2-0 loss to the Dominican Penguins (5-6-5 overall, 2-4-2 PacWest) Saturday evening at Ramirez Field.
Fresno Pacific peppered the goal with shots from the start of the match, hitting the crossbar on three separate occasions, but could not find goal despite holding a slight edge in shots (17-13).
A fairly physical contest saw FPU miss its center back,
Alena Schenk, after a yellow-card earning foul by Dominican caused the defender to exit the game for a segment.
Dominican pounced on the opportunity as Danielle Gonzalez netted a brace for Dominican scoring in the 65
th and 68
th minute, with another chance mixed in between, to lift the Penguins.
FPU had its chances, both before the Penguins earned the lead and after, but ran into a mixture of the Penguin's keeper Angelina Hert making impressive saves and some missed opportunities.
The Sunbirds drop important points on the same day that Hawai'i Hilo clinched the conference title. FPU ends the day tied for 3
rd place in the PacWest.
Fresno Pacific will wrap up the regular season Saturday, November 5
th when it hosts Azusa Pacific at 3 p.m. on Ramirez Field.
