FRESNO, Calif. – The FPU women's soccer team (8-7-2, 5-5 PacWest) closed out its 2022 campaign on Saturday with a 4-0 loss against Azusa Pacific (9-4-4, 6-2-2 PacWest) to finish the year with 15 points and in fifth place in the conference after being picked to finish ninth in the preseason poll.
It started quickly for the Cougars, taking a 1-0 lead in just the eighth minute of action.
Both teams went back and forth with the Sunbirds getting off three shots from
Tessa Simmons,
Diana Garcia and
Madilyn Hernandez, but it was APU again who found the back of the net, this time in the 43
rd minute just before halftime.
The Cougars came out aggressive to start the second half, getting off two shots on goal within the first eight minutes of the period, including a goal to make it 3-0 in the 54
th minute.
The Sunbirds were able to add some pressure after the goal, getting a shot on goal from
Tori De Leon in the 56
th minute from deep that nearly found the back of the net, as well as shots from
Bryana Yoshida,
Ariana Quintero and a shot on goal from
Nadia Flores that was saved, but they were unable to put one in the net and get on the scoreboard.
APU wasn't done, scoring their fourth goal of the game in the 80
th minute to put the game out of reach and get the win and the three points to close out their season.
