FRESNO, Calif.-Delivering a season-high 10 aces and seeing program cornerstone
Corinne Acosta record her 1,000
th career kill, the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds (11-7 overall, 10-3 PacWest) completed the season series sweep of the Azusa Pacific Cougars (9-8 overall, 6-4 PacWest) in four sets (25-23, 23-25, 25-17, 25-20) Friday night in the Special Events Center.
Fresno Pacific reasserts itself into a tie for 2
nd place in the PacWest standings with its first sweep of the Cougars since 2014.
FPU had to battle a bit to find its footing in set 1, with the teams going back and forth for much of the early going.
Katelyn Kirkman's service run was punctuated by kills from
Kaiessa Sounart and
Makena Ogas for a 12-9 lead.
The lead would stay in Fresno Pacific's control with
Chloe Melis delivering a trio of kills along the way to a 22-19 lead. APU pulled within one, but Sounart and Acosta sandwiched one of APU's service errors with kills to seal the set at 25-23.
Service errors worked towards FPU's favor in the 2
nd set as APU scored 5 of the first 7 points, giving the Sunbirds their lone two on long serves.
APU extended the lead on a service run by Annaka Jorgenson, putting FPU in a 12-4 deficit.
But
Catie Speas service run turned the tables as the Sunbirds scored 12 of the next 13 points. Once FPU got the lead, service aces became frequent with Speas,
Anastassiya Barakhoyeva and Acosta all netting one as they extended the advantage to 20-16.
Acosta also tallied her 5
th kill of the match during the 2
nd set, giving her a 1,000
th kill milestone.
However, APU rode behind Jorgensen to score 9 of the next 12 points to even the match at 1-1.
The Sunbirds kept the momentum at the service line with Speas serving FPU to a 6-0 at the start of the third. APU responded to pull within one, but FPU spread the lead to as much as four throughout the middle portion of the game.
Ogas started quickly with 2 kills in the first six points and would add three more throughout the set.
Barakhoyeva's service run proved valuable as FPU scored five straight points, thanks to back-to-back kills by Sounart to take a 23-16 lead, before closing it out 25-17.
Down 4-1 in the fourth, Barakoyeva served FPU in front of APU before Ogas delivered four kills to push the Sunbirds toa 15-8 lead.
Ogas and Speas each added aces in the final 4 points to wrap up the monumental sweep of APU for Fresno Pacific.
Ogas' 15 kills were a match-high while Acosta added 12 while hitting .300 on the evening.
Chloe Melis was apart of 8 blocks while adding 8 kills.
FPU will have just a few hours to rest before they welcome in the Dominican Penguins Saturday at 2 p.m. inside the Special Events Center.
