FRESNO, Calif.-The Fresno Pacific Sunbirds (12-7 overall, 11-3 PacWest) delivered their most dominant performance of the season while sweeping the Dominican Penguins (0-22 overall, 0-14 PacWest) in straight sets (25-10, 25-7, 25-6) Saturday afternoon inside the Special Events Center.
Fresno Pacific posted season-best numbers in attacking percentage, opponent attack percentage, and service-aces while rolling to a season sweep of the Penguins.
FPU's .545 attack percentage is the highest single game performance of any team in the PacWest this season. No team hit over .500 in any other contest this year.
The Sunbirds took control from the start behind an aggressive serve that kept the Penguins out of system in the early going.
Makena Ogas' service run staked FPU to a 5-0 lead.
Once Dominican found a few points, FPU's offense was clinical putting away a series of kills by
Chloe Melis and
Kaiessa Sounart that separated the difference to 16-3.
The Sunbirds serve-receive was equally up to the task preventing Dominican from getting consecutive serves on all but two occasions in the first set.
FPU finished off the opening set 25-10 to go up 1-0 in the match.
Freshman
Cambria Waites took over in the 2
nd set, delivering 4 kills on six attempts as FPU raced out to a 16-4 advantage before closing the second set 25-7.
While the Sunbirds tallied 7 service aces in the first two sets, they became more aggressive with the match in reach.
Anastassiya Barakhoyeva and
Makena Ogas each delivered three service aces in the third while
McKenna Hughes added another as FPU exceeded their season-best aces mark of 11 that they set against Azusa Pacific Friday night.
The 14 total aces were the tip of the iceberg for FPU's aggressive serve that kept Dominican out of system most of the afternoon.
The Sunbirds only time playing from behind came when they trailed after the first two points of the third set, but they quickly flipped the score behind Ogas' service run.
Barakhoyeva served 13 consecutive points to take the match from a 9-4 advantage to a 20-4 vice grip with Acosta serving FPU up to match point.
