Sunbirds Fall Short Against Swords

HONOLULU, Hawaii – The FPU women's soccer team (6-5-2, 3-3 PacWest) jumped to the island of Honolulu on Tuesday for its second matchup on the Hawaii trip, falling short to Chaminade (7-3-1, 4-0-1 PacWest) 2-0.

The Swords came out quick against the Sunbirds, firing off three shots in the first 22 minutes with a goal coming just eight seconds after the 22-minute mark to go up 1-0.

Both teams battled for possession throughout the middle stages of the first 45 minutes, and FPU had a chance in the 40th minute thanks to a shot on goal from Karyssa Lopez, but it was saved by the Chaminade keeper to keep the score at 1-0, where it would stay going into the break.

The two teams traded a pair of shots on goal to start the second half, one being saved by Monique Nevarez, and the other coming off the foot of Ariana Quintero in the 55th minute, but it was also saved.

The Sunbirds kept putting pressure on the Chaminade defense, with three shots in five minutes from Alena Schenk, Nadia Flores and Tori De Leon, but none found the back of the net.

The two teams continued to battle for possession, both firing off shots, but it was the Swords who added a goal late, scoring in the 87th minute to put the game out of reach.

The Sunbirds will conclude their time in Hawaii on Friday when they take on Hawaii Pacific. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Pacific Standard Time
