HILO, Hawai'i-Julian Aran Martin delivered a needed late goal as the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds (2-8-2 overall, 0-4-1 PacWest) earned a point with a 3-3 draw against the host Hawai'i Hilo Vulcans (3-4-4 overall, 2-1-2 PacWest) Saturday afternoon.
The Sunbirds jumped out to an early lead behind inspired offense. Just nine minutes in,
Fabricio Pozas Saboya made an instant impact in the starting lineup converting Antonio Lepe's setup pass into a much-needed FPU goal.
Lepe converted that momentum into a goal of his own, just seven minutes later, to give the Sunbirds a 2-0 lead.
But much of the game was still remaining, and Hilo snuck in a goal just before the half.
While FPU held a 2-1 lead at half, Hilo quickly evened up the game just 8 minutes into the second half.
The Vulcans than captured momentum in the 86
th minute, taking their first lead of the match.
But Martin played hero just 40 seconds later, taking
Jyson Ayala's pass in for the equalizer.
FPU earns its first point of the PacWest season and will aim to keep the goal scoring momentum when it switches islands to play Chaminade at 3:30 p.m. (PST) on Tuesday in Honolulu.
