Lepe Levels Late, FPU Earns Draw at ArtU

SAN FRANCISCO-Non-conference activity in the Bay Area is proving beneficial to the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds (2-8-1 overall) who earned a 1-1 draw with the Academy of Art Urban Knights (3-7-3 overall) in a non-conference contest Tuesday afternoon at Paul Goode Field.

Antonio Lepe's goal in the 89th minute undid an hour and a half of frustration while snapping a four-match scoreless losing streak.

Fresno Pacific, who earned their last win in a non-conference match against Dominican on September 21st, proved their hunger over the first 45 minutes by dominating both the overall possession and the amount of attempts they created on goal.

"The team worked hard from the beginning," Fresno Pacific Jaime Ramirez said of the effort. "We created several good opportunities but came up empty."

The Urban Knights struck just over thirty minutes into the match as they delivered the ball into the box to Elvis Mensah before finding the boot of Gilly Miller, who launched the shot into the top left corner of the goal for a 1-0 lead.

Fresno Pacific had several chances early on and registered 8 shots but the keeper for the Academy of Art, Jaiden Brooks, made four saves to keep the Sunbirds in a 1-0 deficit in the first half.

Lepe led FPU delivering a pair of shots on goal in the first half as FPU was the aggressor for much of the first 45 minutes. But the Urban Knights converted one of their only two shots into a goal and held the lead.

The Sunbirds continued to push the tempo and added 11 more shots throughout the 2nd half, but Brooks upped his save total to ten and kept the score line in tact.

That was until the 89th minute when Fabricio Pozas Saboya was able to push the ball up the field to Lepe who wiggled between two defenders and leveled a shot into the bottom right corner of the net to secure the equalizer and the draw.

Fresno Pacific compiled 20 total shots, including Lepe's equalizer, and created 6 corner kicks while they limited ArtU to just 5 total shots and three corners.

"Our ability to minimize their opportunities," Ramirez added. "After their goal, our urgency gave way to the equalizer. We scored and that's a small victory we'll celebrate."

Its great momentum for Fresno Pacific who heads to Hawai'i this weekend for a three-match trip. The Sunbirds will begin the trip on Saturday with a 6 p.m. (PST) contest against Hawai'i Hilo.

FPU will switch islands to play Chaminade on Tuesday and Hawai'i Pacific on Friday.
