Sunbirds Drop Pair of Matches in First Road Trip of the Season

FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific volleyball team went on their first road trip of the 2021 season on Saturday, traveling to Hayward, Calif. for matches against Chico State and Cal State East Bay. The Sunbirds pushed the Wildcats to four sets before dropping the match 3-1 (25-19, 25-22, 15-25, 25-20) and were swept by the Pioneers 3-0 (25-15, 26-24, 25-10).

GAME 1
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Sunbirds and Wildcats battled early, as a kill from Makena Ogas and an attack error gave the Sunbirds a 12-11 lead.
  • Chico State used an 8-2 run during the middle of the opening set and would go on to take it 25-19.
  • FPU trailed CSUC 6-5 in the second set before Corinne Acosta sparked a nifty 5-0 run for the Sunbirds.
  • The Wildcats took advantage of the middle stages of the set, going up 17-13 and advancing to secure the second set 25-22.
  • The third set belonged to the Blue and Orange, as they'd use a 10-4 run to go up 22-12 and cruise to a 25-15 set win.
  • In the final set, Chico led 18-17 before closing things out with a 7-3 to take the set 25-20 and the match 3-1. 
STATS FROM THE MATCH: 
  • Acosta picked up her fourth double-double of the season, tying for a team-high 11 kills while leading the Sunbirds with 14 digs.
  • Ogas tied Acosta with 11 kills and led the team with an impressive six solo blocks.
  • Kaiessa Sounart had five kills on an outstanding .417 hitting percentage.
GAME 2
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • A kill from Catie Speas knotted the opening set at six, but a prolonged run from the Pioneers helped them take the set 25-15.
  • The 'Birds stormed out to a 10-6 lead in the second set and fought the Pioneers down the stretch, yet the home team managed just enough points to take the set 26-24.
  • The Pioneers completed the sweep with a 25-10 set win.
STATS FROM THE MATCH: 
  • Acosta led the team with 11 digs and six kills.
  • Lauren Wamsley posted five kills and five digs.
  • Annastassiya Barakhoyeva found some offense, converting on three of her four total attacks.  
UP NEXT:
  • It'll be a quick turnaround for the Sunbirds, as they travel to San Francisco for a match against San Francisco State on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
