Wamsley Impresses Against Gators

SAN FRANCISCO – The Fresno Pacific volleyball team played a rare Tuesday evening match against San Francisco State. Newcomer Lauren Wamsley led the Sunbirds with 12 kills on a .308 hitting percentage, but it wasn't enough as the Gators came out ahead 3-0 (25-23, 25-18, 25-20).

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Sunbirds opened the first set with an 8-3 run capped by a kill from Corinne Acosta.
  • SFS answered quickly, tying the opening set at nine.
  • The Blue and Orange trailed 15-12 before they took advantage of a service error that led to a 6-2 run that put them up one.
  • A kill from Makena Ogas put the Sunbirds up 23-21, but the Gators sealed the set with four consecutive points.
  • SFS opened the second set with a huge 15-6 run and would go on to take the set 25-18.
  • FPU battled in the third set, as a kill from Izzy Bandy put them up 8-7 in the early going.
  • The Sunbirds led 12-11 when the Gators pieced together an 8-4 run, going up 19-16.
  • Catie Speas had a kill that brought the Blue and Orange to within one, but the Gators were able to close out the set and the match.
STATS FROM THE MATCH: 
  • Acosta ranked second behind Wamsley with nine kills, while adding 10 digs for a strong night.
  • Chantel Montayre was excellent defensively, scooping up 20 digs on the evening.
  • Anastassiya Barakhoyeva ran the offense well, dishing out 19 assists, and was a dig away from a double-double.
  • As a team, the Sunbirds had six aces led by two from Lauren Ornbaun.
UP NEXT:
  • FPU plays an exhibition against Westcliff on Thursday at 6 p.m. before taking part in the SoCal Freeway Challenge on Friday and Saturday. It'll be a rematch against Cal State San Marcos at 10 a.m. on Friday before a match against Cal Poly Pomona at 7 p.m.
