Sunbirds Knock Off San Marcos, Fall to Stanislaus State

FRESNO, Calif. – The FPU volleyball team continued opening weekend with two matches against CSU San Marcos and Stanislaus State inside the Special Events Center. The Sunbirds swept the Cougars 3-0 (27-25, 25-23, 27-25) before falling to the Warriors 3-2 (21-25, 14-25, 26-24, 25-22, 15-11).

GAME 1
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Sunbirds led the Cougars 11-10 before exploding for a 7-3 run putting them up 18-13.
  • CSUSM scratched back to take a late 25-24 lead before a ball-handling error opened the door for back-to-back aces from Catie Speas that secured the 27-25 set win for the Sunbirds. 
  • A kill from Lauren Wamsley gave FPU an early 7-5 lead in the second set. 
  • San Marcos put together a 9-3 run, lifting their lead to 14-10. 
  • The Blue & Orange trailed 19-14 when Corinne Acosta had kills that started and ended an 11-4 run that gave the Sunbirds a 25-23 set win. 
  • CSUSM controlled the opening stages of the third set, going up 10-5. 
  • FPU answered with a 10-3 run that gave the home team a 15-13. 
  • Late in the third set, the Sunbirds trailed 24-23 when Catie Speas started a late 5-1 run, capped by consecutive kills from Wamsley sealed the set 27-25 and the match 3-0 for the 'Birds. 
STATS FROM THE MATCH: 
  • Acosta tied for a match-high 11 kills on an incredible .455 hitting percentage. She added 15 digs for a strong double-double. 
  • Wamsley continued to impress, matching Acosta's 11 kills. 
  • Chantel Montayre tied Acosta with a team-high 15 digs. 
  • Speas led everyone with four service aces. 
  • As a team, the Sunbirds hit .269 while holding the Cougars to a .209 hitting percentage. 
BEYOND THE BOX
  • The Cougars were selected as the third-best team in the CCAA Preseason Coaches Poll.
GAME 2
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Sunbirds trailed the Warriors 9-4 before Wamsley had a kill that started a 15-1 run. 
  • Acosta closed out the set with a kill off an assist from Lauren Ornbaun
  • Anastassiya Barakhouyeva had a kill that capped an 8-3 FPU run that opened the second set.
  • Izzy Bandy had a kill that extended the 'Birds lead to 21-12.
  • Kaiessa Sounart had a kill that lifted the Blue & Orange to a 25-14 second set win.
  • The Sunbirds were a point away from completing the sweep when they led 24-22, but the Warriors pieced together a 4-0 to take the third set 26-24.
  • FPU opened the fourth set by gaining an early 12-8 lead.
  • Once again, Stanislaus State closed the gap and used a 4-0 run to take the set, this time by a score of 25-22.
  • In the finale set, the 'Birds trailed 9-5 before storming back to cut the deficit to just two. 
  • That was as close as they'd get, as the Warriors would score the final two points they needed to take the set 15-11. 
STATS FROM THE MATCH: 
  • Acosta led all scorers with 18 kills, while adding 18 digs for her third double-double in as many matches. 
  • Ogas was excellent, hammering home 16 kills on an amazing .444 hitting percentage. 
  • Barakhoyeva ran the offense well, dishing out 28 assists while racking up 16 digs. 
  • Montayre led the 'Birds with 29 digs. 
  • Defensively, the Sunbirds held the Warriors to a .163 hitting percentage for the match. 
UP NEXT:
  • FPU hits the road for the first time this season, playing two matches in Hayward, Calif. The first match is against Chico State at 2 p.m. and is followed by a match against Cal State East Bay at 5:30 p.m.
