Sunbirds Outlast Sharks in Five

FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific University volleyball team returned to the Special Events Center for the first time since Sept. 3 as they hosted Hawai'i Pacific. The Sunbirds outlasted the Sharks 3-2 (25-11, 17-25, 25-20, 23-25, 15-11) on Wednesday night, picking up their first PacWest Conference victory of the season.  
 
QUOTABLE
"It feels great being back at home inside the Special Events Center. We love the way our team battled today winning our first 5 set match this season. We were led by Corinne Acosta's 24 kills and only 4 errors, plus 24 digs on a .299 clip. Lauren Wamsley was a beast adding 17 kills and only 4 errors hitting .361. Makena Ogas also, tallied 10 kills hitting .231. We are excited to get back to work tomorrow to prepare for Hilo." – head coach Shasta Millhollin

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Corrine Acosta got the offense going in the first set, hammering home a kill that led to a 22-5 run that helped the Sunbirds cruise to a 25-11 set win. 
  • The Sharks answered with a strong second set, taking it 25-17.
  • The Birds led 20-18 when Lauren Wamsley started a 6-2 run that resulted in a 25-20 set win. 
  • HPU got the better of FPU in the fourth set, taking it 25-23.
  • FPU trailed 5-2 early in the final set, but Chloe Melis started a quick 4-0 run that put them up 6-5.
  • The Sunbirds closed out the set 15-11, taking the match 3-2. 
STATS FROM THE MATCH: 
  • Acosta was unreal for the Sunbirds, setting match-highs with 24 kills and 24 digs. She accumulated a .299 hitting percentage while adding two aces to her stellar performance. 
  • Wamsley was solid, setting a new career-high with 17 kills on an impressive .361 hitting percentage. 
  • Chantel Montayre was stout defensively, scooping up 17 digs on the evening. 
  • Catie Speas had Anastassiya Barakhoyeva ran an effective offense, dishing out 28 and 25 assists respectively. 
BEYOND THE BOX
  • The last time the Sunbirds beat the Sharks was on Oct. 9, 2017.

  • The Blue and Orange are back inside the Special Events Center on Friday at 6 p.m. when they take on Hawaii Hilo.
