Sunbirds Sweep Penguins Again, Headed to Quarterfinals

SURPRISE, Ariz. – The Fresno Pacific women's tennis team opened the PacWest Conference Tournament on Wednesday, defeating 11-seed Dominican by a final of 4-0.

QUOTABLE:
  • "We had a slow start today in doubles, but our girls picked it up and we ended up with that point. That momentum carried over to singles, and that's what we need. Our players got through some nerves, and I loved what I saw after that." - head coach George Rodriguez

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Alice Marques and Daimy Paula picked up a 6-2 victory in #3 doubles, and the tandem of Mariia Borodii and Lea Falentin gave FPU the opening point with a 6-2 win in the top flight.
  • Sanne Brull and Alice Di Matteo were up 4-3 in the unfinished second doubles flight.
  • In singles action, Paula made quick work of Haley Garcia on Court 6 with a 6-0, 6-2 victory that gave FPU a 2-0 lead.
  • Di Matteo followed with the same score in the third flight to put the Sunbirds on the brink of the clinching point, and Falentin locked up the win with a 6-2, 6-2 win on Court 2.
  • Borodii dropped her opening set but was up 5-2 in the top flight, while Brull and Marques both were up a set and leading in the second at the time of the clinch.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • The Sunbirds have now swept the Penguins in three different locations this season, winning by a combined total of 18-0.
  • Falentin's record against Division II opponents this spring improves to 7-1.

UP NEXT:
  • The Sunbirds will face two-time defending league champions Hawai'i Pacific in Thursday's quarterfinal round. The match is set to begin at 9:00 a.m. PST from Surprise Tennis Center in Arizona.
