FPU Falls to Defending Champs in Quarterfinals

SURPRISE, Ariz. – The Fresno Pacific women's tennis team played three-seed Hawai'i Pacific in the quarterfinals of the PacWest Championships on Thursday, hanging tough before ultimately falling 4-1.

QUOTABLE:
  • "I was happy with how our team competed today. We came up short, but they gave it all they had, and as a coach, that's all I can ask for. I was happy to see that we can compete with any team in our conference." - head coach George Rodriguez

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Sharks took the doubles point by taking the second and third flights.
  • Mariia Borodii dropped #1 singles by a final of 6-1, 6-0, and Lea Falentin was saddled with a 6-1, 6-4 loss on Court 2.
  • Sanne Brull got the Blue and Orange on the board with a 7-5, 6-3 victory in the fifth flight, defeating Marta Ruszczynska.
  • Alice Marques fought her way back in on Court 4 but came up short 6-4, 6-3, giving HPU the clinching point.
  • Alice Di Matteo took the first set 6-1 before dropping the second one 6-3 in an unfinished match.
  • Daimy Paula was tied 6-6 and down a set in the sixth flight at the time of the HPU clinch.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • The Sharks have won each of the last two PacWest Championships, and the conference has never produced a champion outside the Aloha State.

UP NEXT:
  • The Sunbirds will now head to the consolation bracket, where they will face Academy of Art for the third time this season. First serve on Friday is scheduled for 9:00 a.m. from Arizona.
