Urban Knights Edge Sunbirds to Close Out Regular Season

FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific women's tennis team hosted Academy of Art in the final match of the season on Saturday, but the Urban Knights came away with a narrow 4-3 victory. 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The top doubles tandem of Lea Falentin and Mariia Borodii picked up a 6-4 victory to clinch the first point of the day for the Blue and Orange. 
  • In singles action, Falentin fell in a battle of nationally-ranked players, dropping the top flight to Sofia Ragona by a tally of 6-4, 6-1. 
  • Alice Marques was tripped up 6-2, 6-3 on Court 4, allowing the Urban Knights to take a 2-1 lead. 
  • Alice Di Matteo pulled FPU even with a 6-4, 6-3 victory in the third flight, and Sanne Brull's 7-5, 6-2 win on Court 5 put the 'Birds on the brink of the clinching point.
  • Julia Ortega defeated Daimy Paula 6-1, 7-5 on Court 6, and all eyes turned to the second flight. 
  • Borodii battled her way back after falling behind early but was ultimately tripped up 7-5, 6-3.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • Falentin's loss is her first against a non-Division I opponent this season.
  • The Urban Knights force the Sunbirds to settle for a series split in head-to-head action this spring. 
 
UP NEXT:
  • The Sunbirds will now turn their attention to next week's PacWest Championships in Surprise, Arizona. Seedings and scheduling will be announced by the league office on Monday.
