‘Birds Outlast Hawks, Remain Perfect in PacWest Pod Play

FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific volleyball team trailed in the final set before unleashing a 10-1 run, powered by six kills from Corinne Acosta to secure a 3-2 (26-24, 25-20, 24-26, 20-25, 15-9) victory over Holy Names on Friday afternoon inside the Special Events Center.    

QUOTABLE:

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The opening set featured back and forth action when the Sunbirds used a 4-0 run to gain a 19-17 lead.
  • The Hawks one point away from clinching the first set, when a kill from Acosta sparked a 3-0 that gave the 'Birds a 26-24 set win.
  • The second set was tied at nine when the Blue and Orange went on a 5-2 run capped by an ace from Anastassiya Barakhoyeva.
  • The Sunbirds completed the second set with a 4-0 run that was finished by an ace from Catie Speas that resulted in a 25-20 set win.
  • The scores from the first and second sets were mirrored in the third and fourth, with the Hawks forcing a deciding fifth set.
  • FPU trailed 8-5 in the final set and went on to unleash a 10-1 run that featured six kills from Acosta that led to the Sunbirds taking the set 15-9 and the match 3-2.
STATS FROM THE MATCH: 
  • Acosta was unbelievable for the 'Birds, leading everyone with 23 kills on a .383 hitting percentage. She added 19 digs to complete the double-double.
  • Speas ended the match with a triple-double, leading the team with 18 digs, 15 assists and 11 kills.
  • Makena Ogas was strong, hammering home 11 kills.
  • Lauren Ornbaun was excellent for the Blue and Orange, leading the Sunbirds with 27 assists.
UP NEXT:
  • FPU hits the road on Friday, April 2 when they travel to Dominican. First serve is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
