Lively Offense Helps ‘Birds Take Two from Hawks to Halt Skid

ALAMEDA, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific baseball team played Holy Names in a PacWest Conference doubleheader on Saturday, taking the opener 11-10 before wrapping up the series with a 7-0 win. Prior to Saturday's opener, Fresno Pacific had scored 11 total runs over their previous seven games.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Jack Foote, Michael Warkentin and Nick Dodd each came up with an RBI in the second inning to help the Sunbirds take the early lead.
  • Holy Names got a run back in the home half, but the Blue and Orange plated three more in the top of the fourth to push the lead to 6-1.
  • The Hawks' recorded the biggest inning of the game to follow, tying the game at 6-6 after Colton Combs reached on an error.
  • The Sunbirds were unfazed, answering with a four-spot in the fifth to go back in front 10-6.
  • A double off the bat of Dominic Masciel brought Holy Names within two runs in the home fifth, and the Hawks again pulled even following the seventh-inning stretch.
  • Trent Greene crushed the first homer of his Sunbird career in the top of the ninth, a bases-empty shot to left with one away.
  • The Hawks ran out of steam and never threatened again in the bottom of the frame, as Gio Helmuth held on to pick up the win and give FPU its' first victory of the series.
  • Jared Aguilar singled home a run to jumpstart the offense in Game 2, giving the Sunbirds a run in the opening frame for the first time in the series.
  • Greene opened the second with a single to center, and Andrue Lackey was hit by a pitch to make it a two-on, no-out situation for Gavin Vangronigen.
  • Vangronigen doubled to left, and Warkentin sent a ball over the right field fence two batters later to make a 5-0 FPU advantage.
  • Designated hitter Matt McGrady added a long ball to cap the big inning, making him the ninth FPU player to go deep this season.
  • Garrett Cooper went the distance on the mound, picking up five strikeouts while scattering four hits over seven innings to earn his second win of the year.

STATS FROM THE DAY:
  • Greene turned in a solid Game 1 at the dish, going 3-for-5 and recording both of FPU's hits that went for extra bases.
  • Dodd drove in a game-high four RBI, while shortstop Jack Foote picked up a two-hit game.
  • Helmuth retired all four batters he faced to earn the first victory of his collegiate career.
  • Isaac Gonzalez went 3-for-4 at the plate in the finale, while Warkentin's three RBI were good enough for a game-best.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • Greene bumped his team-leading batting average to .361 on Saturday, and seven of his 13 hits on the year have gone for extra bases.
  • Dodd has now reached base in eight straight games, the longest streak of the year for the Blue and Orange.
  • The FPU pitching staff has now picked up 151 strikeouts in 129.1 innings, the most of any team in the PacWest Conference.
