Richardson Sets New FPU Standard at State Center Invitational

FRESNO, Calif. – Kyla Richardson of the FPU track and field team made the State Center Invitational historic by setting a new school record in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.85 on Saturday.

QUOTABLE:
  • "Today was historic as Kyla Richardson's 100m breaking a school record in her season debut effort at that distance is special and suggests what is possible once we get to championship season. I'm very happy for her, and very excited for our women's speed squad that looks to be one of the best in the nation this year. It's an unsurprising result based on their work-ethic and self-discipline. Coach Robert Foster is doing something special with them. Overall, the elements were breezy and in combination with the small field size, was not ideal for most competitors. However, it made it easier for us to not get caught up on outcomes and just focus on the process and on working through a short meet with few competitors and shorter rest." – head coach Ray Winter
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Richardson was outstanding in her season debut. She set a new FPU all-time best of 11.85 seconds in the 100m. The mark hits a national's provisional standard and is currently the second fastest 100m in the nation.
  • In the same race, Kyra Bailey ran a lifetime best of 12.05 to move into fifth all-time for FPU in the event. This places her seventh on the current national performance list.
  • Gianna Dickson ran a lifetime best of 14.33 in the 100m hurdles. This would have been a school record, but it was just over the allowable 2 mph tailwind for records (2.1 mph).
  • Chloe Sharp ran another strong 400m, winning her event in 56.37.
  • The field events were highlighted by Klaryssa Moreno's winning hammer throw of 161'1", just a foot and a half shy of her lifetime best and is currently second best in the PacWest.
  • The men's squad was highlighted by the duo of Bryan Banuelos and Patrick Kiprop in the 3,000m run. They went 1-2 in 8:35.18 and 8:36.44, respectively, to move up to third and fifth all-time on FPU's record books. The performance was a 12-second improvement for Kiprop from three weeks ago.
  • Jesse Franco had a solid day in the shot put, winning in 47'0.75" to lay down the second-best mark in the PacWest so far this season.
  • Bjoern Adden continued his winning ways this week as well by winning the long jump in a season-best 23'2".
  • Toby Bartlett also matched his lifetime best in the pole vault with a height of 14'7.25".
