Berry, McClard Lift 'Birds Over Urban Knights

FRESNO, Calif. -  Rachel Berry and Bayli McClard posted double-doubles that lifted the Fresno Pacific women's basketball team over Academy of Art 68-51 on Saturday night. 

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:

  • "We have a handful of weapons and we tried to distribute the ball tonight. It was Rachel and Bayli's night. We found a lot of shots we loved in the first quarter but missed. We wanted to continue to seek those and got a little careless trying to find something better. We learned that lesson with our team. HOW IT HAPPENED:  
  • Bre Hurt's layup gave the Sunbirds a 16-15 lead with 6:02 left in the first half.
  • That layup started a 9-0 run that lasted a quick 1:49, resulting in a 24-15 lead for the 'Birds.
  • Joleen Corona's bucket with 2:10 left in the first half gave the Sunbirds their first double-digit lead of the game.
  • The Blue and Orange pieced together an 11-2 run during the middle stages of the third quarter, lifting the team to a 48-30 lead as they went on to close out the game.

STATS FROM THE GAME:  
  • Berry poured in a season-high in points and rebounds as the junior from Clovis scored 20 and pulled down 15.
  • McClard's double-double consisted of 16 points and 13 rebounds.
  • Felicia Dourva was the only other Sunbird who scored in double-figures, contributing 10 points toward the final score.
  • The Sunbirds gained a significant advantage on the boards, grabbing 53 rebounds to just 31 from the Urban Knights.
  • FPU played fast and furious, scoring 19 fast break points.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:  
  • The 3-0 start in PacWest play matches the 'Birds start to the 2019-20 season.
  • The Sunbirds now hold a seven-game win streak against the Urban Knights.
  • McClard's double-double is her third in four games played this season.
