Sunbirds Earn First Two Wins in Home Double Dip

FRESNO, Calif. -  The FPU volleyball team hosted Pacific Union in doubleheader action on Wednesday, picking up a pair of 3-0 victories.  

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:  
  • Game 1: FPU 3, PUC 0
    • Set Scores: FPU 25-13, FPU 25-12, FPU 25-12 
  • Game 2: FPU 3, PUC 0
    • Set Scores: FPU 25-7, FPU 25-14, FPU 25-12

HOW IT HAPPENED:  
  • The Sunbirds settled into a rhythm early, taking the opening set 25-13. 
  • FPU continued their dominance for the duration of the first match, closing it out with back-to-back 25-12 victories.
  • In game two, the Sunbirds dominated the opening set, taking it 25-7.
  • The Sunbirds continued to roll in sets two and three, taking them 25-14 and 25-12.  
 
STATS FROM THE DAY:  
  • Corinne Acosta led all players with 15 kills in the opener, while Catie Speas and Lauren Ornbaun recorded 17 and 11 assists respectively. 
  • Makena Ogas was untouchable for the first three-setter, recording ten aces from the service line.
  • FPU hit .314 as a team in the first match of the day.
  • Acosta led everyone with 14 kills in the second game.
  • Speas dished out a game-high 24 assists in the second meeting between the two squads.
  • Chantel Montayre was excellent from behind the service line, racking up four aces in game two.
  • Izzy Bandy hit a monstrous .545 in the second match, recording six kills.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:  
  • Ogas' ten aces were good enough for a career-high in a single match. 
  • Speas set a Sunbird career-high with 24 assists in the second match of the doubleheader.
 
UP NEXT:  
  • The Sunbirds will return to the floor next Wednesday when they take on Saint Katherine on the road. The match is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. from Encinitas, Calif.
