Sunbirds Fall to Firebirds in Tight Battle

ENCINITAS, Calif. -  The Fresno Pacific volleyball team played the University of Saint Katherine in a match that saw the Sunbirds fall to the Firebirds 3-0 (25-20, 25-23, 25-21) on Wednesday afternoon.

QUOTABLE:   
  • "Tonight's match was tough, but as a team, we have a solid perspective. We know that there was a tremendous amount of transfer from our practices into tonight's match and we improved in every area that we have been focusing on. We have a lot to work on and we're excited to get back at it in practice tomorrow." – head coach Shasta Millhollin
HOW IT HAPPENED:  
  • A kill from Corinne Acosta knotted the opening set at seven, before the Firebirds went on a 9-1 run.
  • FPU delivered a 6-0 run that cut the USK lead to just three.
  • Catie Speas had the kill that capped a 5-1 run to bring the score to 22-20, but the Firebirds were able to score the final three points to take the opening set 25-20.
  • Set two came down to the wire, as the Sunbirds held a 23-22 lead, but the home team closed the door by scoring the final three points to take the set 25-23.
  • The Sunbirds hustled to an 8-3 lead in the third set, highlighted by two kills from Acosta.
  • The Firebirds found the spark they needed, taking the final set 25-21.
STATS FROM THE DAY:  
  • Acosta led the squad with 12 kills, and finished with a double-double, adding 13 digs.
  • Makena Ogas was solid for the 'Birds, hammering nine kills while adding four total blocks, four digs and an ace.
  • Speas contributed six kills, eight assists and six digs.
  • Lauren Ornbaun led the team with 11 assists.  
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:  
  • Ornbaun tied a career-high with 11 assists, the same number she had in the first match against Pacific Union on February 10.
