Sunbirds Pass Tough Test, Knock Off Concordia 4-3

FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific women's tennis team fell behind early on Monday, but the Sunbirds rallied to improve to 8-0 on the season. The Blue and Orange currently sit alone atop the PacWest Conference standings and are likely to move up in the next edition of the ITA National Rankings.

HOW IT HAPPENED:  
  • The Eagles took all three doubles flights to earn the first point of the afternoon.
  • Ioanna Lathouri was forced to retire in the third singles flight, giving Concordia a 2-0 lead.
  • Sanne Brull was the first to wrap up singles, putting the Sunbirds on the board with a 6-3, 6-1 victory in the sixth flight.
  • In the top flight, Mariia Borodii defeated 27th-ranked Ghazal Pakbaten 6-3, 6-1 to even the score at 2-2.
  • Alice Di Matteo defeated Lou Perrot 6-0, 7-5 in #4 singles to give the 'Birds their first lead of the day, but Concordia's Taylor Lau came up with a 6-3, 6-4 victory in the fifth flight to make it interesting. 
  • All eyes turned to #2 singles, where Lea Falentin got stronger and stronger as the match wore on. Falentin dropped the first set 6-1 before bouncing back with 6-4, 6-0 victories to clinch the point and keep FPU's unbeaten streak intact. 
 
BEYOND THE BOX:   
  • The Sunbirds are ranked 23rd in the most recent edition of the ITA Rankings. 
  • Brull, Di Matteo, and Falentin are a combined 18-0 in singles action so far this season.
