Sunbirds Sweep Another Ranked Opponent, Run Win Streak to Five

FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific women's tennis team picked up a 7-0 victory over Westmont on Saturday, improving the Sunbirds to 5-0 on the season.

  • "Today was a match with some switching around in our team, including our doubles pairings. I was happy with their execution, and it was nice to see this week's hard work in practice definitely paid off. Lea played and won her first match at #1 against a very solid player, and she just continues to grow,even as a freshman. It doesn't stop here, and we will continue to work hard. HOW IT HAPPENED:  
  • Mariia Borodii and Lea Falentin teamed up to take the top doubles flight 6-0, and the tandem of Alice Marques and Sanne Brull picked up a win by the same score in the third flight to give FPU the first point of the day. 
  • Ioanna Lathouri and Alice Di Matteo finished off doubles with a 6-2 victory.
  • Brull defeated Westmont's Ava Verchimak 6-0, 6-0 in the sixth singles flight to put the Blue and Orange a 2-0 lead.
  • Lathouri made quick work of Rachal Jackson in #3 singles with a 6-2, 6-0 victory, and Borodii earned the clinching fourth point with a 6-2, 6-3 victory in the second flight. 
  • Christine Hemry took Marques to three sets before Marques emerged with a 6-2 win in the final set to make it a 5-0 FPU advantage.
  • Falentin defeated nationally-ranked and previously-unbeaten Cade Pierson in three sets in the top flight, and Di Matteo finished off the sweep with a 6-3, 6-4 win in #4 singles. 
 
BEYOND THE BOX:   
  • The Sunbirds are ranked 23rd in the most recent edition of the ITA Rankings, while Westmont is 14th in the NAIA National Rankings.
  • Brull, Di Matteo, Falentin and Lathouri are a combined 16-0 in singles action so far this season.

UP NEXT   
  • FPU will open a two-day Bay Area road trip on Thursday, when they take on Mills College. The match is set to begin at 3:00 p.m. from Meyers Tennis Center in Oakland.
