‘Birds Hang on to Defeat Chaminade, Pull Off Second Upset in Three Days

FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific men's basketball team pulled out a 77-76 victory in the final second on Monday night, defeating Chaminade in PacWest Conference action. The win comes two days after the Blue and Orange knocked off 17th-ranked Point Loma, who played in last year's National Championship.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
  • Final: FPU 77, Chaminade 76
  • Records: FPU (10-16, 10-12 PacWest), Chaminade (15-10, 13-7 PacWest)
  • Location: Special Events Center | Fresno, Calif.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Sunbirds opened the night by coming away with points on three of their first possessions, including a three each from Aamondae Coleman and Sean Nealon-Lino.
  • Chaminade ended the first half on a 12-3 to send the game to its' intermission with a 38-38 tie.
  • The Silverswords saw their lead grow to as many as six with 13:41 to play but were unable to pull away from a relentless Sunbird squad that quickly regained its' rhythm.
  • The two teams went back and forth for the next nine minutes, but a Nealon-Lino triple put the 'Birds in front by a three with 3:36 remaining.
  • Roman Young answered with a three-ball of his own to again pull Chaminade even, and it was Kevin Kremer's hot hand that gave the 'Swords a three-point edge with 63 seconds left.
  • FPU committed what looked like a costly turnover but got a stop on the following possession, allowing Nealon-Lino to hit a clutch three to tie the game at 76 with :17 on the clock.
  • Chaminade missed a contested layup at their end of the floor, and FPU came away with the ball and called a timeout with less than a full second to get a shot off.
  • Nate Kendricks hit Coleman in stride on a near-full court pass, and Coleman was fouled on a shot just inside the arc.
  • After his first free throw came up well short, Coleman connected on the second to seal the win for the Sunbirds.

STATS FROM THE GAME:
  • Coleman came away with game-highs in both points (26) and rebounds (12), while Kremer and Eliet Donley each gave the Silverswords 14 points.
  • For FPU, Nealon-Lino went for 14 points and seven rebounds, while Adrian Antunez and Kendricks added 14 and 12 points respectively.
  • The Sunbirds outrebounded their guests 27-26, but Chaminade won the turnover battle 19-15.

  • Both meetings between FPU and Chaminade this season were decided by just one point, with the home team winning each one.
