‘Swords Edge ‘Birds in Island Finale

HONOLULU – The Fresno Pacific men's basketball team came up just short on Monday evening, falling 74-73 to Chaminade in the final of three PacWest Conference games in five days.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
  • Final: Chaminade 74, FPU 73
  • Records: FPU (4-10, 2-6 PacWest), CUH (7-5, 5-2 PacWest)
  • Location: McCabe Gym | Honolulu

QUOTABLE:
  • "I'm tremendously proud of our team tonight despite the outcome. We have strung together two gritty performances in a row, and if we choose to continue to play with this level of toughness, we will have a chance every single night. We battled the adversity you expect on the road in Hawaii, and we had several chances down the stretch. We will work tremendously hard to be this team every day, and if we do that, outcomes will come." – head coach C.J. Haydock

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The 'Birds controlled the opening tip, paving the way for Aamondae Coleman to come away with the first bucket of the night.
  • Kendall Small hit a jumper to give Chaminade a six-point lead late in the first half, but Jonathan Brown knocked down a triple to cut it to three at the intermission.
  • FPU came away with points on their first six possessions of the second half, taking a 44-37 lead in the first four minutes.
  • The Silverswords followed with a 12-2 run to take a three-point lead, but Sean Nealon-Lino's trey launched a back and forth battle for the rest of the night.
  • After being down by as many as ten with 4:44 to play, Brown's jumper with 85 seconds remaining brought the Sunbirds within a basket.
  • Tyler Cartaino hit a free throw to make it a three-point game in the final minute, and Coleman dropped a layup with 40 seconds to go to bring the Blue and Orange within a point.
  • The Sunbirds managed to get two contested game-winning shot attempts off, but the 'Swords were able to escape for the victory.

STATS FROM THE GAME:
  • Aamondae Coleman was one of four Sunbirds in double-figures, leading the team with 22 points.
  • Adrian Antunez matched Coleman with a team-high six rebounds to give the Blue and Orange a 32-31 edge in the battle of the glass.
  • The Blue and Orange committed 16 turnovers but forced their hosts into 23.
  • The Sunbirds connected on 46% of their attempts from the floor, including a 6-of-20 effort from behind the arc.

BEYOND THE BOX:
  • Aamondae Coleman has led the team in scoring more frequently than anyone else on the team.
  • Chaminade's win snaps a three-game losing skid against Fresno Pacific.
