Nationally-Ranked Sharks Too Much for Sunbirds

FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific women's basketball team was hit with a PacWest Conference loss on Tuesday night, falling 98-66 at the hands of 10th-ranked Hawai'i Pacific.

HOW IT HAPPENED: 
  • The Sharks controlled the opening tip, and Alysha Marcucci came away with a three to give HPU the early edge.
  • HPU wasted no time getting in an offensive rhythm, opening the night on a 17-6 run. The Sunbirds didn't help their own cause, struggling to a 28% effort from the floor for the first half. 
  • Hawai'i Pacific went right back to work in the second half, seeing the lead swell to as many as 28 en route to their 12th straight conference win. 
 
STATS FROM THE GAME: 
  • Marcucci led all scorers with 24 points, while teammate Starr Rivera followed with 21 of her own.
  • Four Sunbirds got into double-figures, highlighted by Jessica Malazarte's 17 points.
  • Amy Baum gave the Sharks a double-double, grabbing 12 boards to help HPU outrebound their hosts 49-28.
  • The Blue and Orange won the turnover battle by a margin of 17-13. 
 
BEYOND THE BOX:
  • HPU's last loss to a PacWest Conference opponent came in February of 2019 against Point Loma. The Sharks have won 22 straight games against league opponents.

  • The Sunbirds have one game left on the current home stand, as they are set to host Point Loma on Saturday afternoon. Tipoff from the Special Events Center is slated for 2:30 p.m.
