FPU Opens up at Oredigger Classic

GOLDEN, Colo. – The Fresno Pacific volleyball team opened the 2019 season at the Oredigger Volleyball Classic on Friday. The Sunbirds fell to Colorado Mesa 3-0 and University of Colorado at Colorado Springs 3-1.

"Today was a good day for us. Although we did not get the outcome we hoped for, we gained a lot of information about ourselves. Our team is learning a completely new offense and defense and it takes time for systems to be effective. Overall, we are pumped about this team and hungry to compete again tomorrow," said head coach Shasta Millhollin.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Sunbirds got off to a slow start in the early morning game against Colorado Mesa as the Mavericks got out to a 6-2 lead. FPU managed to bounce back quickly and tie it up 10-10, but Mesa would take the lead from there and run away with the first set 25-19.
  • The Birds found themselves down 9-2 in the second set, but a kill by Miska Legatova generate a three-point run for FPU. Unfortunately, the Mavericks could not be stopped and took the second set 25-19.
  • The third set produced a similar story as FPU started down again and got a little bit of momentum but could not out do Mesa. FPU was held to .093 hitting percentage in the match compared to UCM's .305.
  •  In game two of the day, FPU got off to a quick start taking a 17-11 lead and took the first set 25-19 while hitting .371. The Birds, however, could not sustain that as they dropped the next three sets to the Mountain Lions.

STATS OF THE MATCHES:
• Miska Legatova played well in Friday's opener, as the redshirt-freshman totaled a team high of 21 kills in the two games. Christina Tran tallied 38 assists against UCCS well adding eight digs, and one ace. Freshman Makena Ogas added 13 kills for the Sunbirds in the second match.
