'Birds Battle in Day One of the West Region Showcase

SAN FRANCISCO - The Fresno Pacific volleyball team traveled up to the Bay Area to compete in the West Region Showcase and hope to pick up their first win of the 2019 season. The day started off with a 3-2 loss against Cal State Dominguez Hills before the Sunbirds fell in four sets against Humboldt State. 
 
"We are getting better point by point," hed coach Shasta Millhollin said. "This team has so much grit and energy. We are pumped for tomorrow and ready to keep grinding."

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Sunbirds came out ready to play in game one against the Toros as they took the opening set after a long back and forth battle. In the second set, FPU fell behind 16-7 but managed to fight their way back and take a 2-0 lead over Dominguez Hills.  
  • CSUDH managed to force a fourth set after battling with the Birds to take set three. It was all Toros in the fourth and fifth sets, however, as they took down the Birds and took the match after being down 2-0.  
  • The 'Birds looked to rebound against the Lumberjacks but were unsuccessful. Humboldt did not get the win easily, however, as FPU took them to 26-24 and 29-27 in the first two sets. The Jacks took the third set as well.
 
STATS OF THE MATCH:
  • Makena Ogas lead the team in hitting percentage against Cal State Dominguez Hills as she totaled a .235 in the match with 17 kills on 34 attempts. Ogas also added five blocks for FPU.
  • Senior Christina Tran continues to shine, as she produced a team-high 26 assists and 13 digs in the loss to the Toros.  
  • Ogas had a team high of 13 kills in the loss to the Jacks, while Jaalyn Sotoa-Stuebing added seven with a .278 hitting percentage.

The Sunbirds will wrap up the West Region Showcase on Saturday, when they take on Concordia-Portland at noon and San Francisco State at 5:00 p.m.
