FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific baseball team fell twice on Friday, dropping the opener of a doubleheader against Holy Names by a final of 4-3 before the Hawks took the nightcap 4-2.
INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
Game 1: Holy Names 4, Fresno Pacific 3
Game 2: Holy Names 4, Fresno Pacific 2
Records: FPU (6-13), HNU (9-15)
Location: FPU Diamond | Fresno, Calif.
Series: FPU leads 20-6
HOW IT HAPPENED:
• A leadoff double to start the game helped the Hawks get on the board first, but singles from
Brian Hefner and
Christian Collins pulled the 'Birds even in the second.
• Holy Names took a 2-1 lead on a sac fly in the top of the fourth, and FPU's baserunners were limited until the seventh.
•
Garrett Cooper and
Nick Dodd each singled following the stretch, and
Michael Warkentin lofted FPU's third hit of the inning into shallow right field to plate them both and give the home nine its' first lead of the day.
• The Sunbird bullpen combined for three walks in the top of the eighth, allowing Holy Names to retake the lead for the final time.
• The Hawks started the scoring with two unearned runs in the third inning of the nightcap, and FPU finally broke through with an RBI-double off the bat of
Matt McGrady in the sixth to cut the deficit to one.
• Holy Names got a two-run shot from Joshua Nelson in the top of the ninth to provide some insurance, and a
Ross Dodds RBI hit in the home half was the closest the 'Birds would get.
STATS FROM THE DAY
• Right hander
Esteban Lizaola once again pitched into the eighth inning, surrendering three earned runs on seven hits while fanning seven.
• Relievers

Josh Acosta provided little help out of the FPU pen, combining to retire just one of the five batters they faced.
• Southpaw

• Fresno Pacific gave the ball to
Nic Boatman for the nightcap, and the righty answered by recording a career-high 10 strikeouts over 7.2 innings of work.

• Neither of Boatman's charged runs on Friday were earned.
• Hefner has now turned in seven multi-hit games this season, the highest mark on the team.
