FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific baseball team fell in both ends of a doubleheader against Colorado Mesa on Friday, dropping the opener 3-2 before the Mavericks took the nightcap by a final of 5-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The Mavericks started the scoring in the second with a leadoff homer from third baseman Dominic DeMarco.
• Three batters later, designated hitter Hayden McGeary singled in a second run, and the two teams exchanged zeroes until the ninth inning.
• A double off the bat of Hunter Douglas gave CMU an insurance run to push the lead to 3-0 in the top of the final frame.
• With a runner aboard and the Sunbirds down to their final out,
Tristen Alvarez lifted a ball over the fence in left to bring FPU within one.
• CMU made a pitching change, but a soft groundout ended the Sunbird threat and the Mavericks took the opener 3-2.
• The Sunbirds mustered just one hit in Game 2, a
Brian Hefner single up the middle in the bottom of the first.
• Three unearned runs in the third inning of the nightcap proved to be all the Mavericks would need, but CMU added another two runs in the final inning.
STATS FROM THE DAY
• Alvarez' dinger was his first of the season and just the second for FPU as a team.
• Nic Boatman delivered six innings and allowed just two earned runs in the opener, while
Carson Schellenberg tossed the final three chapters.
• Justin Fuson took the hard-luck loss in the nightcap, giving the Sunbirds 6.1 innings and seven strikeouts before giving way to the bullpen.
• Tyler Rumbaugh and
Kobie Anton each recorded an out in the seventh.
BEYOND THE BOX:
• FPU has been held to under two runs on four occasions this spring, and they are 0-4 in those games.
• As a team, the Sunbirds' saw their ERA drop to 2.75 on Friday, the second-best mark in the PacWest Conference.
