Late Stretch in Carson Sinks Sunbirds, CSULA On Tap

CARSON, Calif. - The Fresno Pacific men's basketball team was tripped up on Thursday night, falling 68-64 against Cal State Dominguez Hills. Freshman Jonathan Brown led the team in scoring for the first time in his collegiate career.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
  • Final: CSUDH 68, FPU 64
  • Records: FPU (0-3), CSUDH (1-2)
  • Location: The Torodome | Carson, Calif.

QUOTABLE:
  •    "We just weren't good enough tonight. We had some glimpses where the ball moved really well on offense, where we really defended, and where we made some progress, but our lack of composure in a couple critical stretches cost us," head coach C.J. Haydock said. "We missed some defensive assignments that led to a big first half run for them, and we failed to make winning plays down the stretch despite having 3-4 opportunities."

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Toros controlled the opening tip but didn't take the first lead of the night until the ninth possession of the game.
  • Nick Kornieck gave CSUDH a 35-33 lead with a late three, but A.J. Kirby answered at the other end to send the Blue and Orange to the intermission with a one-point edge.
  • FPU began the second half with a 9-3 run, but the Toros refused to go quietly on their home floor.
  • The Sunbird led for most of the second half, but CSUDH' Andrew Whitsett dropped a layup and converted an and-one with 18 seconds left in the game to put the home team in front for good.

STATS FROM THE GAME:
  • Brown shot 50% from the floor while leading the 'Birds with 15 points.
  • Aamondae Coleman was the only other FPU player in double-figures, going for 14 points.
  • FPU shot 43% from the floor for the game, including a 6-of-15 effort from behind the arc.
  • The Toros were forced into 17 turnovers, but the home squad claimed the battle of the boards by a 38-25 tally.

BEYOND THE BOX:
  • Brown is the third Sunbird in as many games to lead the team in scoring.
