QUOTABLE:
• "Point Loma did the little things better than us, particularly in the first half, and it's very tough to play catch-up against the upper half of this league. I'm excited about continuing to build with this group. There are 33 points still out there, so we're certainly not out of it. Hopefully, we can surprise Concordia at their place next week. We have a whole week to prepare, and we'll be looking for a little bit of redemption from last year. If we can continue to improve, we should be able to challenge for those three points."
HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The Sea Lions controlled the ball and the tempo for most of the first half, keeping the Sunbirds out of their comfort zone.
• Point Loma went on top early in the second half and attempted to sit on the lead for the duration of the night.
• With under five minutes to play, Fresno Pacific took four shots in 14 seconds, but the big break never came. Two were blocked, one hit the crossbar, and the final was just wide of the net.
SCORING:
• (46:15) Jorge Navarro took a shot inside the box, but the ball caromed off the foot of an FPU defender attempting to make a save and ended up as an own goal.
STATS OF THE GAME:
• Fresno Pacific saw plenty of opportunities, outshooting their guests 17-11. The two teams combined for just four shots on goal, with the Sunbirds taking three of them.
• Point Loma's Wiktor Lasota picked up three saves to earn his third consecutive clean sheet, while FPU's
Patrick Timmer was held without a save for the first time in his career.
• Each team took six corner kicks, while FPU was credited with 15 of the night's 13 fouls.
BEYOND THE BOX:
• After losing their first two games, Point Loma has rattled off five consecutive victories, with each being separated by just one goal.
• Saturday's meeting was the first between the two teams since 2007 that featured just one goal.
• 14 of FPU's 17 shots came in the second half.
UP NEXT:
• The Sunbirds hit the road next week, taking on Concordia in another PacWest battle on Saturday. Opening whistle from Irvine is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
