HONOLULU  – The Fresno Pacific University baseball team picked up its first doubleheader sweep of the year on Saturday, claiming the opener against Hawai'i Pacific 13-6 before wrapping up the series with a 8-0 victory. Saturday marked the first time the Sunbirds have ever won a game in Honolulu after dropping the previous six contests at Hans L'Orange Park.
FPU scored in bunches throughout the entire twin bill, beginning with back-to-back four-run frames in the opener. The Sharks scratched across two runs in the third and sixth innings, but the Sunbirds erupted for five more runs just before stretch time. HPU's eighth-inning rally attempt was cut short at just two runs, and the Blue and Orange came away with their first victory of the series.
Five Sunbirds contributed a multi-hit game, including a 4-for-5 effort at the plate from first baseman
Joey Gallegos. The senior added a career-high four RBI as the team matched its season-high with 17 base hits. Â
Nic Boatman received the starting nod for FPU, and he responded by turning in the longest outing of his career. The righthander allowed four earned runs on six hits over eight innings while striking out three and walking two en route to his third victory on the mound.
Zach Fleeman overcame a hit to record an otherwise perfect ninth on just eight pitches. The senior southpaw has now surrendered just one run over his last three appearances on the hill out of the Sunbird bullpen.
For the home Sharks, third baseman Ryan Torres-Torioka hit a home run to help him match Gallegos' four RBI for the game. Starter Blake Flint took the loss after being roughed up for eight runs through just 1.1 innings and giving way to the bullpen.
Jordan Knoll as the first Shark reliever of the day, tossing 4.2 innings and allowing just two runs while whiffing three. Evan-Thomas May struggled in a quick outing, and Tyler Hazlett finished the game as the only Shark pitcher with a run attached to his name.
The first four Sunbird hitters of the nightcap each recorded a base hit, and the series finale began with the team's third four-run inning of the day. A
Baron Bower home run highlighted a three-run fourth before
Tristen Alvarez drove in the final score in the sixth inning.
Lefthander
Tyler Rumbaugh went the distance in his first career start, fanning seven Shark hitters along the way. Rumbaugh joins
Trent Ashford and
Nic Boatman as the only Sunbirds with a complete game this spring.
Kyle Detwiler delivered the first 3.2 innings on the mound for the home nine, allowing seven runs on eight hits before being chased from the game. Ryan Sanchez tossed the final 3.1 chapters, racking up six strikeouts and allowing a single unearned run.
Fresno Pacific will be at home for the rest of the season and is set to begin a four-game series against Academy of Art on Thursday evening. First pitch from FPU Diamond is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
