TURLOCK, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific University baseball team dropped both games of a twinbill on Sunday, falling 7-4 and 5-3 at the hands of Stanislaus State.
"We're disappointed with the way this series turned out, but we've got to keep building on what we're doing. Our offense just wasn't there today," head coach
Oscar Hirschkorn said. "We need to get back to work tomorrow and build on the positive things that we did this weekend, but we are going to be fine."
The Warriors struck first in Sunday's opener, scoring three runs in the first two innings before FPU managed to scratch across its first run of the day in the third. Gino Franschetti homered to lead off the bottom of the fourth, and Charlie Gaff followed with a double before coming in to score three batters later.
A two-RBI single from
Baron Bower in the top half of the fifth helped the Sunbirds trim the Warrior lead to 5-3, but the home team got both runs back in the bottom half. FPU's final run of the game came in the eighth by way of a
Travis Anderson double, as the Sunbirds went in order in the final stanza.
FPU starter
Jonathan Molina was chased after 4.2 after allowing five earned runs on eight hits while striking out five.
Nic Boatman tossed the final 3.1 frames in relief, overcoming three hits to prevent the Warriors from scoring any further.
Stanislaus State again got on the scoreboard first in the nightcap, striking early on a home run from John Holleran and another base hit from Franschetti. Bower drove in
Derek Arkelian in the third inning, but the Warriors responded with three runs in the home fifth to take their final lead of the afternoon.
Josue Mendivil took the loss in his Sunbird debut after lasting 4.2 innings and striking out four Warrior hitters.
Tyler Rumbaugh finished out the fifth before
Matt Bergandi delivered his second scoreless frame in as many days.
Fresno Pacific is set to return to action on Tuesday, when they host Cal State Monterey Bay at FPU Diamond. First pitch is slated for 5:00 p.m.
