Velarde Records Hat Trick as Sunbirds Soar to PacWest Victory

HAYWARD, Calif.  – The Fresno Pacific men's soccer team knocked off Holy Names on Saturday, exploding for five second-half goals to pick up a 7-2 victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• Holy Names struck first, but the Sunbirds found an offensive rhythm to take a 2-1 lead.
• The Hawks found the equalizer with 11 seconds to play in the first half.
• Fresno Pacific scored five goals in the second half to cruise to a 7-2 victory.  

SCORING:
• (16:50) Carlos Vazquez-Perez handled a pass from Josiah Romero and turned into to the first score of the afternoon.
• (26:48) Anthony Velarde's free kick found Sawyer Fischer, who recorded his first career goal with a header just in front of the net.  
• (42:40) Velarde got in on the scoring with a second-chance effort after Aaron Peters' initial shot was stopped by the HNU keeper.
• (44:49) Josiah Romero found the back of the net for the third time this season to pull the Hawks even at 2-2.
• (50:59) Velarde extended his team lead in scores with a second goal in the 51st minute after assists were credited to Sebastian Acero and Aaron Peters.
• (57:39) Peters recorded his first career goal with some help from Fischer and Velarde.
• (63:00) Pak Hei Chan assisted Peters' second goal of the night five minutes after his first.
• (69:23) Peters picked up an assist when he connected with Velarde in the 70th minute.
• (76:39) Reece Rivera and Brian Leyva teamed up, allowing Leyva to record his second goal.  

STATS OF THE GAME:
• The Sunbirds outshot their hosts 23-8, including a mark of 15-5 on frame.
• Juan Nieves recorded six goals between the pipes for the Hawks, while Patrick Timmer picked up two before giving way to Santiago Covarrubias to finish the match.
• Fresno Pacific took five of the game's seven corner kicks.  
 
BEYOND THE BOX:
• FPU has now had at least one player record a hat trick in six straight seasons. 
• In their last two second halves, the Sunbirds have outscored their opponents 9-0 behind goals from five different players.  
• Fresno Pacific totaled 23 points in the victory, the highest single-game mark of any team in the PacWest this season.
 
UP NEXT:
• Fresno Pacific returns to action on Saturday, when they host California Baptist in another PacWest Conference battle. Opening whistle from Ramirez Field is slated for 7:30 p.m.
