Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Sunbirds Remain in Title Hunt with Late Victory over Vulcans

FRESNO, Calif.  – The Fresno Pacific women's soccer team picked up a key 2-1 victory on Monday night, defeating Hawai'i Hilo in the waning moments to record a program-best seventh consecutive win. The Sunbirds remain in second place in the PacWest Conference standings with just two games left on the schedule.

QUOTABLE:
"Hawai'i Hilo is a hardworking and scrappy team. They had us on our heels early, and we had to battle our way back into the game in the second half. Once we were able to tie the game, we were able to settle down and control the play. This wasn't our best game, but it was definitely one that showed our character and determination." - head coach Rob Podeyn

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The Vulcans got on the board on 44 seconds before the first half ended, carrying a 1-0 lead into halftime.
• After a hand ball in the box, the Sunbirds found the equalizer on a penalty kick.
• With just 59 seconds remaining, Fresno Pacific found the back of the net to move in front 2-1.

SCORING:
• (44:16) Leighana Weaver scored her first goal of the year after handling a pass from Clarissa Guerrero and dribbling past her defender.
• (78:52) Mariah Montoya connect on the PK for her fifth score of the season.
• (89:01) Whitney Snow's initial shot was blocked, but the ball bounced right back to her, allowing her to shoot again for the game-winner.

STATS OF THE GAME:
• Fresno Pacific outshot their hosts 13-8, including a slim 5-4 mark in shots on frame.
• The Vulcans earned three of the game's five corner kicks.
• FPU's Summer Hammond and Jenna Hufford of UHH matched one another with three saves in the net.
• The foul count ended in balanced fashion, with FPU having just one more than the home team.

BEYOND THE BOX:
• If FPU wins out and CBU ties or loses another game, FPU would claim their first ever PacWest Conference title.
• Montoya has taken all three penalty kicks for the Sunbirds this season and hasn't missed. She is now 4-of-5 for her career.
• Snow is now tied for fifth on the program's all-time list in game-winning goals after recording her fourth on Monday night. Like Snow, teammate Rachel Anderson picked up four deciding goals in her first season as a Sunbird only a year ago.

UP NEXT:
• Fresno Pacific will look for their eighth straight victory and three pivotal points on Thursday, when they take on Chaminade University. Opening whistle from Honolulu's Saint Louis Field is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. PST.
