OAKLAND, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific men's basketball team was upended by Holy Names 82-73 on Saturday night in PacWest action at Tobin Gymnasium.
T.J. Viney dished out a career-best 10 assists and
Spencer Krannitz added 16 points, but the Sunbirds had trouble on the glass as HNU was able to capitalize on 20 second-chance points to earn the win.
With the defeat, FPU falls to 4-16 overall and 4-9 in the PacWest. HNU improves to 4-16 overall and 4-10 in league action with its first win over FPU since the 2013-14 season.
The Sunbirds jumped out to a 15-9 lead in the opening seven minutes of the game after a layup from
Oliver Herting, but HNU answered with an 18-2 run the next six minutes. FPU chipped away the rest of the half to head into the locker room tied at 38.
After each team exchanged buckets the first 10 minutes of the half, HNU managed to jump ahead by nine with a 9-2 run with six minutes to play. R.J Horn drilled a pair of free throws to cut the deficit to two with 1:47 to play, but FPU wouldn't come any closer the rest of the way.
The Sunbirds finished 46 percent from the floor, but were held to 32 percent from deep. Krannitz hit three from behind the arc while adding four rebounds and two blocks as the team's leading scorer. Herting added 12 points on 6-of-8 shooting,
Suhail Mohammadi scored 10 points to go along with four assists and
Jeff Bartley added 10 points.
HNU out-rebounded the Sunbirds 44-33 despite the game's leading rebounder being FPU's
Mike Crawley with 11. Holy Names grabbed 16 offensive rebounds, however, and turned them into 20 points.
Five different Hawks scored in double-digits, led by Jewels Sanders with 18. Jason Webster added 17 points, five assists and four rebounds.
FPU is back in action at home on Saturday, Feb. 4 against Dominican (4:30 p.m.)
